Just stumbled on the fantastic works of Matt Small, a UK artist who captures portraits of people on the street. He paints with both oil and water based pigment and as we know, oil and water don’t mix. The result is a brilliant mishmash of brazen, strong imagery. Vivid and saturated colors which swirl and drip around each face, distorting the features just enough to lend interest and project their own brash identity.
Matt paints on found objects collected from the streets, thrown out debris. Car doors, old appliance parts, discarded crates – all become his canvas and influence the shape and texture of each final work. Full of humanity, pride and compassion – they are arresting, colorful beings – full of moving life. Portraits of real people with a real punch.
