We are head over heels for Emma Overman, her paintings have a wonderful naive quality, full of fantasy woodlands and fairy tale animals. There are often happy or pensive girls or lovey-dovey couples who look very childlike. Innocent good vibes permeate most her works, pastoral fields where friends frolic and young women imagine.
Emma’s works reminded me of an illustrator I loved as a little girl, Joan Walsh Anglund – with their huge round cheeks and mouth-less faces. Her characters have less of a sticky sweetness to them, (thankfully) and with their slanted eyes, call to mind the dancing mushrooms in the Disney Fantasia movie. Even her “darker” works have a light-hearted playfulness about them, full of lovely wood textures and strokes. The finished works are framed in complementary and detailed frames, putting some beautiful vintage icing on the cake!
