Featured Artist: Gina Martynova
Big hair art always commands our attention for some reason, maybe it’s the Dolly Parton in us. Gina Martynova has a beautifully fun series, titled Of Folklore & Fashion Tales, full of portraits of pretty women with bountiful hair-dos. Piled high in round fanciful mounds of decorated goodness – the hair is composed of delicate Asian inspired floral patterns and graphic ribbons. She combines oil and watercolor – oil for the figure and watercolor for the hair.
One of the underlying concepts of her art is excess; its effects on human nature and its portrayal in fairy tales and fashion. The concept is derived from Gina’s desire to explore her heritage, having lived abroad all her life, and glimpse into what has subconsciously been imprinted on her soul. The fusion of cultures, art styles and philosophies have evolved into Starry, the artist’s signature style. Mixing oil and watercolor, the artist approaches each piece as an experiment.
