Exhibition Preview: Dan Witz
Dan Witz has a solo show opening in Rome - Public and Confidential at Wunderkammern. The artist specifically created new works in which illusionistic doors, gates, and bars offer a view of hidden souls. These depictions are an extension of projects started in 2012, in collaboration with Amnesty International, in which the artist reflects on the freedom of thought and expression of the individual.
These are moody and wonderfully intense works, capturing the feeling of isolation and imprisonment in a studied way. Dan works from his staged, often complex but always dramatic photographs, sometimes painting directly on them – creating a somber realism of modern day entrapments.
Featured below : A complete image, titled – Long Island City, NY, with a cropped closeup detail beneath it.
Dan will also present a new series, Natural History, in which he continues to consider the significance of physical “doors” – generating reflections on the intersection of public and private spheres.
His celebrated Animal Mosh Pits (selected, below) will also be on display, oil masterpieces that unleash in us repressed primordial instincts; as well as his iconic portraits of girls with cell phones.
Reception Opening: Saturday Sept. 28th, 2013 – 7pm
Exhibition Dates: Sept. 28 – November17th, 2013
