Foto Fix: Phyllis Galembo
Photographer Phyllis Galembo has made over twenty trips to places of masquerade in Africa and the Caribbean, to document their theatrical adornments in cultural and religious performances. Her impressive works depict the characters, costumes, and rituals of African practices and their diasporic manifestations. These are fantastic works of art, meticulously woven and crafted by hand, full of symbolism and vibrant beauty.
Art On The Web
It’s not often that I go to a Tumblr site and just can’t pull away. However, the well curated site - The Villa of Ormen - did just that, pulled me in for an extended darkly fantastic voyage. If you like otherworldly, surreal, mysterious imagery with haunted overtones, this is the bomb. Bits of words of wisdom, philosophical quotes and symbolism also sprinkle this site, in between the stunningly gorgeous images.
Currently on exhibition in Spain is a solo show by the artist Rubenimichi titled Sol Negro (Black Sun). His outstanding works are full of surreal and symbolic imagery, elegantly executed with a clean, sharp style. Many of them incorporate elements of occult, heraldry, optical devices and wildlife – sometimes placed with a human figure. These are beautiful works full of thought, juxtapositions and impeccable execution.
